The new superfood you need to ‘sea’ to believe

Words by Hannah Pourhady

In the new age of 2020, (because, let’s be honest, it’s a totally different world now) we’ve been introduced to new phenomena of home workouts, vegan cooking, and Zoom quizzes. If you’d told me two years ago that we’d be buying face coverings from a vending machine, I’d have thrown my head back and laughed movie-style. But now here we are, in a real life movie.

While this year has undoubtedly had more downs than ups, there are some pretty amazing habits we should definitely take with us into the following years. Spending time with our families, making an extra effort to contact friends through the now super popular Zoom quizzes and game nights, and making smarter decisions about our health.

One new way to do this is by adding a new little ingredient to our diets, and here I’m looking at purple sea moss (scientifically known as the Chondrus Crispus), which is a kind of seaweed packed with vitamins and 92 out of 102 minerals that are essential to our body. The colour itself emanates royalty and greatness. Indigenous to the warm tropical sea water off the coast of Jamaica, it is dived for and peacefully harvested by hand responsibly to preserve the ecosystem by local divers in Jamaica.

In addition to having huge benefits for skin, purple sea moss also provides a source of folic acid, potassium, vitamin D, magnesium, and omega-3 fatty acids

Speaking to Jamie Dennis, owner of Manchester based The Sea Moss Elixir, he told us how beneficial this little plant actually is.

“People spend thousands of pounds on products and countless chemical treatments to ‘fix’ their skin problems, including acne. Your skin is the largest organ in the body and if you don’t heal it from the inside, it will never be truly healed.

“Sea moss is rich in sulfur, it is antibacterial, antiviral and antimicrobial. High sulfur content really helps to decrease the excessive production of sebum (oil) in the skin. Together with the antibacterial effect on acne bacteria, it helps to reduce the severity of acne in people who suffer from this condition. And then… BOOM!

“Our Sea Moss Elixir gel is 100% natural so it can be used for the external glow as well as the internal glow!”

While you can buy The Sea Moss Elixir ready made as a delicious beverage, it’s also available in its raw form.

How to use raw purple sea moss

Soak in a bowl of clean water for up to 24 hours, then drain and replace with fresh water and boil until a gel like consistency appears. Blend the gel, and once it’s cooled use at least one dessert spoon per day.

You can add this directly to shakes, hot water, soups, salads and more. Keep in a container, refrigerated, and the purple sea moss gel will last for 2-3 weeks.

In addition to having huge benefits for skin, purple sea moss also provides a source of folic acid, potassium, vitamin D, magnesium, and omega-3 fatty acids. With a consistent supply of these, the body enjoys effects such as a boost in blood flow and improved circulation, which helps to control and regulate blood pressure. It also increases oxygen saturation in the blood which is critical for a healthy body all around.
